According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 21.9% of Americans aged 12 or older used illicit drugs in the past year. The most commonly used illicit drug was marijuana, with 52.5 million people reporting its use. Additionally, 9.2 million individuals misused opioids during the same period. Notably, 46.3 million people met the criteria for a substance use disorder, including alcohol and drug-related disorders. 

Substance Use Disorder Rates:

25.4% of illegal drug users have a drug disorder.
24.7% of those with drug disorders have an opioid disorder, including prescription pain relievers or heroin.

Alcohol Use:

138.522 million Americans 12 and over drink alcohol.
28.320 million or 20.4% of them have an alcohol use disorder.
